Did you know that every year we welcome dozens of high school and university students who choose to complete their PCTO (Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation) or internship at Chatterbox?

We interviewed one of them: Maria, a sixteen-year-old student from the Eleonora d’Arborea Linguistic High School in Cagliari, currently taking part in the PCTO program with our Year 2 class.

To find out what motivated her to choose our school and how her experience unfolds in the classroom, read the article!

Q: Why did you choose this PCTO program?
A: I chose this project among the various options offered by my school because I was drawn to the bilingual environment and the opportunity to work with children—a field I’ve always enjoyed, thanks to previous experiences such as volunteering at my parish. For me, it was a way to combine my passion for teaching with my desire to improve my English by experiencing the language in a real and dynamic context.

Q: What were your first impressions of the school environment?
A: The Chatterbox environment immediately surprised me with the freedom and independence given to the students. Compared to traditional schools I’ve attended, everything here feels more open and stimulating: classrooms with round tables and shared spaces like the central mat encourage collaboration. It’s fascinating to see how children move independently and actively participate in activities.

Q: What activities do you do during your PCTO?
A: My days are filled with different activities. I read with the children, support them with their assignments, and help those who may have some difficulties. It’s rewarding to witness their effort and progress: sometimes, just a small hint is enough to unlock their understanding. Every day is unique because children always surprise you with their direct and spontaneous way of thinking.

Q: How is this experience influencing your academic journey?
A: This experience is a true linguistic immersion. Participating in lessons in English pushes me to think quickly in that language and communicate naturally. Moreover, observing how children learn makes me reflect on the differences between the Italian and international education systems, broadening my perspective on studying and teaching.

Q: Have you received support from the school staff?
A: The support has been essential. The teachers, especially Maestra Eleonora, have always actively involved me in the lessons, allowing me to interact directly with the children and experience the classroom from within. I also had moments dedicated to one-to-one reading with the students—a simple but meaningful activity that helps create a special bond.

Q: Would you recommend this experience to other students?
A: Yes, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys being with children and is willing to challenge themselves. Patience is essential because children can be unpredictable, but it’s an experience that truly enriches you. It teaches you to see the world with a more open mind and reminds you of the importance of curiosity and simplicity.
