Valentine’s Day is often thought of as a celebration of romantic love, but for very young children in playschool and primary school, it can be a wonderful opportunity to reinforce the concepts of friendship, kindness, and love in general.
Let’s tell our children to celebrate the people who make their lives special, such as family members, friends, and teachers. Let’s encourage them to think about what it means to be a good friend and how they can show kindness to others every day. Let’s remind them that even simple gestures like sharing a toy, giving a hug, or saying thank you are small ways to spread love.
Reading books about friendship and love on this day is also very helpful to reinforce those positive values. Maestra Eleonora, the Italian teacher for Year 1 and Year 2, suggests some titles easily available on Amazon:
The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly
The Story of a Snail Who Discovered the Importance of Being Slow
The story of the Cat and the Mouse Who Became Friends
Another fun and meaningful way to help children understand the spirit of Valentine’s Day is to create colourful cards with kind messages for family members, friends, classmates, or neighbours.
We have prepared a set of themed cards for your children to colour and personalise, download them for free by clicking on the button below.
Enjoy! And happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
